Past Event: Improvisation

This event has passed.
The Yale Dance Lab is thrilled to announce its fall 2024 project on improvisation in dance and music, led by esteemed masters of the form.
Improvisation is about responding to surrounding conditions thoughtfully, ethically, and creatively. Not merely physical inventiveness, dance improvisation hones skills that apply in other areas of life: the ability to listen, to connect, to respond. Through physical means, we will work on cultivating an ability to move through the world with resilience and compassion.
The project was led by a collection of award-winning guest artists from diverse backgrounds: Jodi Melnick, Ishmael Houston-Jones, Eiko Otake, Lacina Coulibaly, Renee Robinson, and Emily Coates. Each artist has designed different structures and scores with the dancers. Now we have pieced together this material into a public performance, accompanied by live musicians led by South African composer Thuthuka Sibisi.
Public Performances are at 1pm and 4pm on December 7, 2024, at the EF Room, on the 5th floor of Payne Whitney Gymnasium.
Please note: This event will be standing only. Accommodations can be made for seats, if needed.
Sponsored by the Yale Dance Lab with support from the Wallace Fund for Dance Studies and Theater, Dance, and Performance Studies in partnership with the Yale Schwarzman Center and Council on African Studies at Yale.
